Snake bites are a serious concern in rural and semi-urban areas of India. Knowing what to do — and what NOT to do — can make the difference between life and death.
DO's:
- Stay calm: Panic increases heart rate, which spreads venom faster through the bloodstream.
- Remove jewelry and tight clothing: Swelling will occur, so remove rings, bracelets, and tight clothing near the bite area.
- Keep the affected limb still: Immobilize the bitten limb at or below heart level.
- Seek medical help immediately: Get to the nearest hospital as quickly as possible.
- Note the snake's appearance: If you can safely do so, remember the snake's color, pattern, and size to help doctors identify the species.
DON'Ts:
- Do NOT cut the wound: Cutting the bite site is dangerous and increases the risk of infection.
- Do NOT suck out venom: This is ineffective and can harm the person providing first aid.
- Do NOT apply a tourniquet: Tourniquets can cause severe tissue damage and may lead to amputation.
- Do NOT apply ice or cold compresses: This can damage tissue.
- Do NOT give the person alcohol or caffeine: These substances can worsen the effects of venom.
Remember: Most snakes in India are non-venomous, and even venomous bites don't always result in envenomation. However, every snake bite should be treated as a medical emergency.
